Ham Bone and Potato Soup

This hand crafted soup is simple and flavorful! It's an extraordinary method to utilize scraps from Thanksgiving, Christmas or Easter and it will warm you up on a virus fall or winter day! I made this soup the previous spring utilizing the remaining ham bone from our Easter informal breakfast and chose to spare the formula to post now. 


I normally make this soup after a vacation like Christmas, Thanksgiving or Easter, however it's extremely extraordinary whenever you happen to have a ham bone remaining. The flavor in this soup is very mind boggling. That flavor that originates from the bone and the ham drippings is striking, profound and very great! I don't include any salt except if it's required just before serving.

Ham Bone and Potato Soup

Ingredients

  • 1 leftover ham bone plus juices and extra meat from cooking
  • water
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 6 large potatoes, peeled and diced
  • black pepper, if needed

Instructions

  1. In a large soup pot, add ham bone, meat and juices. Add water until ham bone is covered. Season with black pepper, if desired.
  2. Cook over medium high heat for 20 minutes, then add onion. Cook for another 15 minutes, then remove ham bone and set aside.
  3. Add potatoes, cook for another 10-12 minutes until potatoes are tender. Meanwhile, pull excess ham from the bone and add it to the soup as the potatoes are cooking. Remove from heat and serve.
  4. For slow cooker option, follow directions as above, but cook for 2-3 hours on high, then add potatoes and cook on high for another 30-45 minutes or until potatoes are tender.
